La Lic. Melisa Pontrelli Albisetti, miembro del Grupo de Investigación Geología de Costas y Paleoecología de este Instituto,  participó de la serie de seminarios  Land, Water and Ecosystems organizada por la Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation de Australia, con el dictado del seminario  «Managing climate impacts and extreme weather in Argentina: Opportunities for integrated coastal zone management», el lunes 9 de noviembre de 2015 en Canberra ACT.

Abstract:Preparing for climate impacts such as extreme weather, coastal erosion and sea level rise is increasingly recognized as a necessary component of best practice development planning. The significant value of current and planned infrastructure in coastal cities that is exposed to climate impacts, combined with population vulnerability, means that public policies need to be geared to manage more extreme and frequent coastal hazards. The south east of the Province of Buenos Aires in Argentina has significant public and private infrastructure and communities that are vulnerable to coastal hazards, and this exposure is projected to increase as a result of ongoing development in hazard prone areas and climate change. Unfortunately, Argentina has a lack of coordination between different agencies and ministries that deal with extreme events and coastal issues. This situation is further aggravated by the lack of a national policy on integrated coastal zone management that would enhance and harmonize the various activities related to mitigation and adaptation. This talk will present ideas about how the lack of adequate and targeted policies has exacerbated the impact of extreme events in different areas of the south east of Argentina, and canvass a number of potential solutions.
